Harnesses

Scape supports Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, pi, omp, GitHub Copilot, and Cursor as coding agent harnesses — switch between them globally or per-session.

A harness is the coding agent CLI that runs inside each Scape session. Scape supports seven harnesses out of the box:

HarnessCLIProvider
Claude CodeclaudeAnthropic
CodexcodexOpenAI
OpenCodeopencodeOpenCode
pipiEarendil (multi-provider)
ompompStencil / oh-my-pi (multi-provider)
GitHub CopilotcopilotGitHub
Cursorcursor-agentCursor (multi-model)

Setting the default

Go to Settings → Agents → Default agent to pick your default harness. The picker only shows harnesses that are installed on your machine. On first launch, Scape auto-detects which ones are available.

Per-session override

When creating a new session via Cmd+N, the creation picker lets you choose a specific harness for that session — regardless of your global default.

Capability differences

Not all harnesses support every Scape feature:

*pi has no native MCP client — Scape bridges its full tool catalog into pi through a pi extension it manages automatically, so pi sessions get the same Scape tools as the other harnesses.

GitHub Copilot sessions show live activity as unknown rather than working/idle: Copilot records each turn only after it completes, so Scape has no reliable mid-turn signal and reports an honest "unknown" instead of a possibly-wrong "idle." Copilot usage is measured in AI Units (not a dollar cost). Copilot's MCP support can be disabled by your organization's Copilot policy — where it is, a Copilot session still runs but can't use Scape's tools.

Installing pi

pi is an npm package: npm install -g @earendil-works/pi-coding-agent. Current releases require Node 22.19+ (on Node 20 you'll get the older legacy-node20 release line). Authenticate by running pi in any terminal and using /login — it supports 30+ providers, including Anthropic Claude Pro/Max, OpenAI, and OpenRouter, or plain API-key env vars like ANTHROPIC_API_KEY.

Installing omp

omp (omp.sh, also known as oh-my-pi) installs as a standalone binary: curl -fsSL https://omp.sh/install | sh, or brew install can1357/tap/omp. Authenticate by running omp in any terminal and using /login — it supports OAuth (Anthropic, OpenAI, and more) and plain API-key env vars, and can also use a remote auth broker via OMP_AUTH_BROKER_URL.

Installing GitHub Copilot CLI

GitHub Copilot CLI is an npm package: npm install -g @github/copilot (requires Node 22+). Authenticate by running copilot login in any terminal — it uses your GitHub account's Copilot subscription (OAuth), or an environment token (COPILOT_GITHUB_TOKEN, GH_TOKEN, or GITHUB_TOKEN), or a custom "bring your own key" provider. Copilot CLI access and third-party MCP tools can be gated by your organization's Copilot policy.

Installing the Cursor CLI

The Cursor CLI installs as a standalone binary: curl https://cursor.com/install | bash (it lands in ~/.local/bin/cursor-agent). Authenticate by running cursor-agent login in any terminal — it uses your Cursor account (browser sign-in), or a CURSOR_API_KEY environment variable. Scape runs cursor-agent specifically, never the Cursor editor's cursor command.

Cursor has no separate effort setting: the reasoning level is part of the model name (for example claude-opus-5-5-high or gpt-5.3-codex-low) — run cursor-agent --list-models to see what your plan offers. Scape trusts the session's folder for you (so a new worktree doesn't stop on Cursor's "Do you trust this directory?" prompt). Cursor usage is measured in your Cursor plan's credits (not a dollar cost).

Account profiles

Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode support per-project account profiles — bind a different account and configuration directory to each project, and add alternate accounts to switch between. See Account Profiles for details. (pi, omp, GitHub Copilot, and Cursor account profiles aren't supported yet.)

Advanced settings

Every harness gets the same baseline section in Settings → Agents: an install/sign-in status row and a custom launch command (a custom executable path plus extra launch arguments). Claude Code's custom command additionally resolves shell aliases via your login shell, and Claude Code has one extra setting — the prompt-editor bridge (Ctrl+X Ctrl+E).

Use a custom command when you need to point Scape at a specific binary or pass additional flags.
